Objects provide comfort, utility, and joy but we instinctually expect their servitude, devaluing our interactions. Wave recontextualizes our expectations through a reluctant radio.

Wave is a radio that exists in a peaceful, whole resting state and expresses tension when used.

Tools:  Paper, Foamcore, Radio Parts
Duration: 4 Weeks

In its natural state, Wave’s form is full and open.

To use, squash the spine down on delicate paper strips to expose the controls on the sides. Stick your hand in on the right to adjust volume or on the left to scroll for stations

Thoughts & Process

The world doesn’t stop when we aren’t watching. Grass blows in the wind unsupervised. The Toy Story toys scheme. And water mills turn.

Grass ripples in the wind, but it also is beautiful in still air, confident in its form and purpose. The objects we design lack this spirit.

Inspiration

How can I design an object that, although not truly alive, seems to possess a life of its own—a life that is momentarily disrupted whenever it is used?

Sketching

Like a rock laying on grass or a hand dragged through water, I was drawn to the motion and tension in paper slivers.

Fabrication & Experimentation

Deciding final details and planning foamcore construction.

Process

Quick models, figuring out foamcore bending technique, body shape variation, with/without stand, handle shape variation.

Key Takeaways:
  • Paper, although simple, contains potential for mastery of craft. Mistakes, impatience, or unfamiliarity are easily spotted.
  • Wow, taking process photos makes putting everything back together a lot easier.
  • Drawing is good and helpful, but we all knew that.
