Wave, a radio which compromises its natural state to allow for use only to snap back.

radio in action

Considerations:

We imagine objects existing in our lives to serve us. But how do they continue to live when we are not using them? What were they like before we acquired them? What if objects expressed change between a natural state and when used?

Constraints:

An object which does not exist only to obey us does not mean that it is painful to use. Perhaps it should have characteristics that are unnatural or must be compromised to be used, signalling that its natural state is not one which humans are involved in.

    Thoughts & Process

Similar to a rock laying on grass or a hand dragged through water, the motion and stress in paper slivers attracted me. I sketched through forms with character, body, and essence hoping to create something with an alterable presence.

Fabrication & Experimentation

I worked towards expressing disruption when used and a return to a “natural state”. The motion and deformation involved should affect the radio somehow, and the elasticity of paper aided in this well, allowing a snap back to shape after being altered.

Modify the electronics on the radio allowed me to change the interactions to better suit the concept. Wires extended, potentiometers replaced, etc.

Key Takeaways:

  • Paper although simple, contains potential for mastery of craft and mistakes, impatience,  or unfamiliarity are easily noticable
  • Wow, taking good process photos makes putting everything back together a lot easier
  • Drawing is good and very helpful, but we all knew that.
